[the multi-angled story about the new Urban Industrial in New York]
“The sudden change of ambiance in a street within the space of a few meters; the evident division of a city into zones of distinct psychic atmospheres; the path of least resistance that is automatically followed in aimless strolls (and which has no relation to the physical contour of the terrain); the appealing or repelling character of certain places — these phenomena all seem to be neglected. In any case they are never envisaged as depending on causes that can be uncovered by careful analysis and turned to account” -Debord, 1955 / THE SITUATIONISTS
With the development of capitalism, communication technologies were rapidly appropriated - monopolized purely for financial interests. When information about the public is taken out of the public realm what type of access is left for communities to participate in the shaping of their neighborhoods and cities? This lack of participatory urban homesteading between the governance and the users fosters an embedded topographic divide.
New York City is in a moment of residing in between eras. Is the drive towards integration that allows citizens to author their own futures? Is it the progression towards a blanketed or prescribed future that covers everyone? New industries, rise of artisanal craft, and digital manufacturing will become the aged infrastructure of tomorrow and a new era of nostalgia.
